Data sources & methodology

NPI Central is built entirely on public federal datasets. Every page cites its source and the date the data was last refreshed.

NPPES Data Dissemination

The National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES), published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), is the authoritative source for National Provider Identifiers. It is a public-domain dataset of roughly 9 million provider and organization records, refreshed monthly with weekly incrementals.

NUCC Health Care Provider Taxonomy

We map each provider’s taxonomy code to a human-readable specialty using the National Uniform Claim Committee (NUCC) crosswalk, updated twice yearly.

Corrections & disputes

NPPES is the system of record. The fastest way to correct your information is to update it directly in NPPES, and the change will flow here on the next refresh. If a page is wrong or you want it reviewed, contact us and we’ll investigate.
