What is an NPI number?+
An NPI (National Provider Identifier) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by CMS to U.S. healthcare providers through the NPPES registry. Every provider who bills Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance has one, and it never changes over the course of their career.
How do I look up a provider's NPI?+
Use the search box above: enter a provider's name or their 10-digit NPI number to run an instant lookup across the full NPPES registry. Each result opens a profile with the provider's specialty (NUCC taxonomy), credentials, practice location, and registry status — no login required.
Where does this data come from?+
Every record comes from the NPPES (National Plan and Provider Enumeration System) NPI registry, the public dataset CMS publishes monthly. NPI Central ingests and indexes that file — currently the June 2026 vintage — and joins it to the NUCC taxonomy crosswalk for readable specialty names.
Is NPI Central free?+
Yes. Searching the registry, browsing by specialty or state, and viewing provider profiles are all free with no account required. The data is public record under the NPPES program.
Can I look up a provider by specialty or location?+
Yes. The provider search lets you filter 9.6 million providers by specialty, state, city, credential, entity type (individual or organization), and registry status. You can also browse curated directories by specialty and by state.
